Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Is DigiScan 360° a Quality Assurance Tool or a Monitoring System?

A Quality Assurance Tool. When utilized by a trained technician, the DigiScan 360° unit is a quality assurance tool for inspection of the membrane at the time of the scan. Damage can occur to your membrane immediately after a scan, and the DigiScan 360° tool will not pick up the damage. If you require a membrane monitoring system, please see options available at: www.smtresearch.ca.

On what type of roofs does Digiscan 360° typically work?

Mostly Commercial Low-Slope Roofing. The DigiScan 360° can be applied to waterproofing and common low-slope commercial roofing. Digiscan 360° electronic leak detection (ELD) can be utilized on plaza decks, green roofs, and typical protected roof membranes. DigiScan 360° typically is not applied to shingled or metal sloped roofing systems.

On what type of roof membranes does DigiScan 360° work?

Electrical non-conductive membranes: 2 ply SBS, hot mop, liquid applied, TPO, and PVC. DigiScan can be applied to most waterproofing and roofing membranes, including but not limited to 2 ply SBS, hot mop, liquid applied, TPO, PVC, and similar electrical non-conductive membranes. If you have an innovative membrane or project that fits outside this list, our engineering team can assist with testing your membrane for effective electronic leak detection methods.

On what type of roof decks does DigiScan 360° work?

We work on Concrete, Metal or Wood Decks. The principles of electric field vector mapping and non-conductive membranes typically works best with concrete or metal decks.

How long does a typical scan take to complete?

Scanning time is highly dependent on the size and details of the roof. DigiScan 360° is the most efficient method to complete an electrical scan of the roofing or waterproofing membrane. With further details on your project we could provide an estimated price and length of time.

When should we complete a DigiScan 360° to our membrane?

The DigiScan 360° is best performed with the membrane complete, prior to covering with overburden. We can also scan after the overburden has been put in place for investigation of leaks after the construction has been completed.

Should we still flood test a roof?

In many jurisdictions, ASTM flood testing has been replaced by electronic leak detection systems such as DigiScan 360°. The flood test can take days to complete: require a finished and complete roofing system; and the flood test itself may damage the completed construction. Additionally in a fully adhered roofing system, the flood test may not show the location of a membrane hole - because the concrete backing up the membrane is intact and restricting the water flow.

Can I use DigiScan 360° to detect an active water leak on an existing roof?

Yes, DigiScan 360° can locate leaks in existing membranes. Use DigiScan 360° to save time and frustration in hunting down membrane breaches with overburden placed on top of them. Many overburdens do not require removal to scan through them. Contact us with your project details for confirmation.

Does DigiScan 360° meet the ASTM D7877 Standard?

Yes, the DigiScan 360° unit can perform ASTM D7877 Low Voltage Membrane Electric Field Vector Mapping methods with ease. ASTM D7877 “Standard Guide for Electronic Methods for Detecting and Locating Leaks in Waterproof Membranes” can be found for purchase from ASTM here https://www.astm.org/d7877-22.html.
